the lake sturgeon- also known as the rock sturgeon- is a lake fish that looks very silly.
it lives in temperate freshwaters, and eats snails, crayfish, mussels and aquatic insects but may also include small fish and eggs. they can live to be 50-100 years old!!! that's a lot of years....
surprisingly, they are endangered critically!!! due to them being a pest to fishing nets, fishers decided to over-harvest (use a renewable resource until it can't reproduce fast enough) sturgeons, and they can't mate enough to survive!!!
obviously, there's not a lot we can do. sure, we can stop over-harvesting, but change takes a lot of time!! by then, their population will not be ":growing!", it'll be ":dwindling!".
some people do 'egg takes', where they help hatch eggs so they don't have a still-birth. then again, fish aren't "born", so....
lake sturgeon egg take. video of the century
wanna see them eat? i sure do!
one time i went to the chicago aquarium and pet lake sturgeons for half an hour, that's on my list of top 10 experiences. if sturgeons mated faster, they'd be able to outrun stuff like over-harvesting. but alas, they're just silly guys who can't get spouses.
